San Diego, San Diego County
City leaders set the land aside in 1868, and it took the name Balboa Park in 1910, ahead of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The Spanish Colonial buildings raised for that fair still line El Prado. Today the park holds museums, theaters, gardens and the San Diego Zoo on about 1,200 acres near downtown San Diego.
